Six SCC Football Teams Reach 2025 State Playoffs; Daniel Hand (SS) and Sheehan (Class S) Win State Titles

Six SCC football teams qualified for the 2025 state playoffs, and two teams (Daniel Hand in Class SS; and Sheehan in Class S) came away as state champions. It is the third time in the last four years that the SCC has won two state titles. The SCC now has won 37 state titles since forming in 1994.

  • Ten SCC different teams have won a state title since 1994, led by Daniel Hand’s nine championships (1997, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2018 and 2023). Cheshire, Hillhouse and Xavier have each won five titles.
  • Guilford’s 2025 berth makes them the 17th different SCC team to qualify for the state playoffs since 1994. Daniel Hand has the most playoff appearances (18). The longest playoff streak is held by Shelton (5 straight years – 2014-2018). Cheshire (1994-97) and Daniel Hand (2010-13) each had four-year playoff streaks.
  • Since 2005, the SCC has won two or more state championships seven times (2005, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2022 and 2023), including a state-record three (Class LL, L and M) in 2012.
  • There have been three All-SCC matchups in state football finals — Cheshire defeated Hamden, 16-14, in the 1996 Class LL final; Daniel Hand bested Hillhouse, 35-0, in the 2005 Class M championship game; and Xavier defeated Shelton, 28-27, in overtime in the 2014 Class LL Small title game.
