For the first time in the league’s 30-year history, the SCC will have the #1 teams in the final boys basketball, girls basketball and boys ice hockey state polls.
GametimeCT.com posted an article commemorating the feat.
Notre Dame (28-0), under the direction of head coach Jason Shea, won the Division I state boys basketball title on March 17 with a 52-46 victory over St. Bernard. It was ND’s first-ever state title. The Green Knights also won their third straight SCC title on Feb. 28.
Hamden (25-3), led by head coach Amanda Forcucci, won the Class LL girls basketball state title on March 17 with a 46-40 victory over SCC-rival Sacred Heart Academy. It was Hamden’s second straight state title. The Green Dragons also won the SCC title for the second straight year on Feb. 21.
Notre Dame (19-4-2) won the Division I state boys ice hockey title on March 19 with a 4-1 victory over New Canaan. The Green Knights, under the direction of head coach Larry Vieira, also captured the 2024 SCC Division I playoff title, and finished the season with a perfect 14-0 record against teams from Connecticut.
This almost happened back in 2013.
The SCC champion Hillhouse Academics won the Class LL boys basketball title, defeating SCC-rival Fairfield Prep 52-42, and earned the state’s #1 ranking with a final 26-1 record.
In boys ice hockey, Fairfield Prep defeated SCC-rival Notre Dame, 3-2, at Ingalls Rink to capture the Division I state title and finish with a 23-1 record (18-0 versus Connecticut opponents). The Jesuits were the voted as the No. 1 team in the final New Haven Register Top 10 poll, garnering all 17 first-place votes.
Unfortunately, the trifecta did not occur.
Mercy, which won the Class LL girls basketball title against Lauralton Hall on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Maria Weselyj, was voted No. 2 in the final state poll. The Tigers received three first-place votes and totaled 418 points but was just behind Capital Prep (25-2) who had 438 points.
