SCC’s March 2024 Athletes of Month, presented by j.roo’s of North Haven
The Southern Connecticut Conference, with the support of presenting sponsor j.roo’s of North Haven, is naming a female and male athlete of the month during the academic year. Each recipient receives a certificate and $25 gift card to j.roo’s.
ALANA PHILPOTTS, basketball, HAMDEN
The SCC Player of the Year, Alana Philpotts completed an outstanding senior campaign, leading the Green Dragons to the Class LL state championship during the month of March. In three games, Alana averaged 13.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.5 steals a game. Hamden defeated SCC-rival Mercy, 37-33, in the quarterfinals, before prevailing against Newington, 51-40, in the semifinals. In the championship game against Sacred Heart Academy on March 17, Alana posted a game-high 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals in the 46-40 win. Teaming up her sister Leah, Alana led the Green Dragons to back-to-back SCC and Class LL state titles and a 52-3 record during the that two-year span.
BIAGIO PEPE, ice hockey, CHESHIRE
A senior forward, Biagio scored seven goals and one assist in five games during the month as the Rams captured the SCC and State Division II titles. On March 1, Pepe scored one goal in Cheshire’s 7-1 win over Amity Regional in the SCC title game. On March 18, Pepe scored four goals as the Rams defeated SCC-rival East Haven, 6-3, in the Division II state championship game. At 24-1-1, Cheshire posted the most wins in a season in school history, winning the SCC/SWC Division II championship for its first conference title in 14 years, and capturing the school’s first CIAC title since the 2011 Division II championship.
