Hamden Girls Basketball Completes Perfect Season

Hamden won its first-ever girls basketball state title with a dominating 63-48 victory over previously-undefeated Fairfield Ludlowe on March 18 at Mohegan Sun.

The Green Dragons, who captured the SCC title on Feb. 22, finished the 2022-23 season with a perfect 27-0 record – becoming just the second SCC team to finish a perfect season.

In 2001, Guilford also completed an undefeated season (27-0) after winning the Class L title – walloping Brien McMahon, 87-60, in the championship game at Central Connecticut State University’s Detrick Gymnasium.

Hamden, under the direction of head coach Amanda Forcucci, earned a spot in the Class LL championship game after defeating Danbury, 65-38, on March 3, Enfield, 46-34, in the quarterfinals on March 8, and Newington, 57-44, in the semifinals on March 13.

In the championship game, the Green Dragons raced to a 12-4 first quarter lead and put the game out of reach, leading 32-14 at halftime. SCC Player of Year Leah Philpotts led the way with a game-high 28 points (shooting 10-of-16 from the field), while Alana Philpotts, Gianna Donnarummo and Gianna Robert each added nine points. Kamora Moore contributed eight points.

Another SCC team, Mercy, also reach the Class MM state championship game, falling to New London, 57-47, on March 19 at Mohegan Sun. The Tigers (20-7), under the direction of long-time head coach Tim Kohs, defeated SCC-rivals East Haven, Foran, and Daniel Hand to reach the state title game.
