SCC’s February 2024 Athletes of Month, presented by j.roo’s of North Haven
The Southern Connecticut Conference, with the support of presenting sponsor j.roo’s of North Haven, is naming a female and male athlete of the month during the academic year. Each recipient receives a certificate and $25 gift card to j.roo’s.
KYRA SWEENEY, ice hockey, HAMDEN
A freshman goaltender, Kyra made 264 saves in nine games, recording a 96.0 save percentage. On February 23, she recorded 29 saves as Hamden defeated West Haven/SHA co-op, 3-1, to capture its first league title. In three SCC playoff games, she totaled 49 saves and allowed just three goals and earned the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player award. A week later, she recorded 41 saves in a 1-0 loss to Darien in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Kyra earned First Team All-SCC and Second Team CHSGHA All-State honors.
ABDOU TOURE, basketball, NOTRE DAME
A sophomore guard, Abdou averaged 23.2 points and 7.8 rebounds a game as the Green Knights went 9-0 and captured their third straight SCC title. He shot 64.6 percent from the field, and 82.6% from the free throw line. Abdou set a school record with 49 points in a victory over Wilbur Cross on February 14. In the SCC championship game on February 28, he scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead ND to a 61-47 victory. Abdou was named First Team All-SCC and the league’s Player of the Year.
