SCC’s October 2023 Athletes of Month, presented by j.roo’s of North Haven
The Southern Connecticut Conference, with the support of presenting sponsor j.roo’s of North Haven, is naming a female and male athlete of the month during the academic year. Each recipient receives a certificate and $25 gift card to j.roo’s.
LANEY SMITH, Mercy, Girls Soccer
A junior forward, Laney Smith led the Tigers to a perfect 10-0 record during the month of October. She scored 10 goals and seven assists in those 10 games as Mercy advanced to the SCC championship game. On November 2, Smith, who was named as the SCC’s Girls Soccer Player of Year, scored one goal as Mercy defeated Cheshire, 3-0, to win the SCC title.
KIERAN DRISCOLL, Xavier, Boys Soccer
The leader of the Falcons’ defensive unit, Kieran Driscoll led Xavier to a 7-2-1 record the month of October, including a 3-2 overtime victory over top-seeded Cheshire in the SCC semifinals on October 30. Driscoll’s all-around play was a key reason the Falcons allowed just 12 goals in those 10 games. Xavier would go on to capture the SCC title on November 2 with a 3-0 win over Daniel Hand.
