SCC’s March 2025 Athletes of Month, presented by j.roo’s of North Haven
The Southern Connecticut Conference, with the support of presenting sponsor j.roo’s of North Haven, is naming a female and male athlete of the month during the academic year. It is the third year that j.roo’s has sponsored the Athlete of Month award. Each recipient receives a certificate and $25 gift card to j.roo’s. j.roo’s is located at 243 State Street in North Haven.
Selena Batres, Jonathan Law, wrestling
Jonathan Law sophomore Selena Batres concluded her season on March 9 at the New England Women’s Wrestling Championship where she earned All-New England honors (finishing third in the 107-pound weight class). For the season, she finished 20-0 in matches against girls from the state of Connecticut and 24-2 overall. Batres is a two-time Connecticut State Champion (she won the 107-pound class on March 1), a Queen of the Mat Champion, and a fourth-place finisher in both the SCC and New England tournaments.
Lorenzo DeFilio, Sheehan (East Haven co-op), Ice Hockey
The SCC Division II Player of the Year, senior Lorenzo DeFilio led the East Haven boys ice hockey co-op to the state title during the month of March. He scored two goals and added two assists in two SCC playoff games, before totaling 10 goals and four assists in four state tournament games, leading an Yellowjackets’ offense that scored 31 goals. In the state final on March 23, DeFilio scored two goals in a 7-3 win over Cheshire. For the season, he totaled 73 points (53 goals, 20 assists).
