SCC’s April 2024 Athletes of Month, presented by j.roo’s of North Haven
The Southern Connecticut Conference, with the support of presenting sponsor j.roo’s of North Haven, is naming a female and male athlete of the month during the academic year. Each recipient receives a certificate and $25 gift card to j.roo’s.
JENICA MATOS, sophomore, CHESHIRE
A sophomore pitcher for Cheshire, Jenica Matos had a 9-1 record on the mound during the month of April. She pitched five shutouts and recorded 144 strikeouts and a 1.20 earned run average in 80 innings of work. Opposing hitters hit .095 against her during those 10 games. On April 25, Matos pitched a no-hitter against fifth-ranked Southington (winning 4-1). The Rams have been ranked in the top ten all season.
LUKE SHANNEHAN, Lacrosse, FAIRFIELD PREP
A junior midfielder, Luke Shannehan was a standout for the Jesuits, who recorded a 9-1 record versus some top competition during the month of April. The Jesuits, who have been ranked among the state’s top five teams all season, defeated six SCC rivals during the month, and added an impressive non-league victory against FCIAC power New Canaan, 8-7, on April 25. In that game, Luke scored one goal and added one assist. He totaled 38 points during Prep’s 10 games during the month.
