SCC Fares Well at State Open Cross Country Meet

The SCC fared well at the 2023 CIAC State Open Cross Country meet, held November 6 at Wickham Park.

The 2023 SCC girls champion, Cheshire, placed second and earned a trip to this weekend’s New England Championships in Belfast, Maine. 

The Rams finished with a score of 166, just ahead of third-place Glastonbury (170).   Cheshire was led by senior Alexa Ciccone, who played sixth overall (18:59).   Teammate Mia Vientos finished 41st (20:19).

In addition to Ciccone, four other SCC runners finished in the top 25 and earned spots in the New Englands.  Wilbur Cross senior Anna Omelchenko finished eighth (19:04), while Sacred Heart Academy’s Juliette Forstrom was 11th (19:06)   Daniel Hand sophomore Annecy Vlieks was 23rd (19:43) followed by Shelton senior Hannah Andrejczyk (25th, 19:44).

Three other SCC girls teams – Mercy (9th, 255), Guilford (16th, 318) and Wilbur Cross (17th, 319) were among the top twenty teams in the state.

On Oct. 28, Mercy won the Class M state title, while Guilford was second in Class MM. Cheshire finished third in Class L.

In the boys race, Xavier finished third (140) and qualified for the New England Championships for the seventh consecutive year.   It is the longest active New England streak for any Connecticut boys cross country program. The Falcons were led by junior Jack Ouellette, who finished 15th overall (16:17).  Teammates Cameron Nephew (32rd, 16:38), Owen Martin (36th, 16:47) and Jack Larkin (47th, 16:57) finished in the top 50.

Two other SCC boys runners qualified for the New Englands.  Amity Regional sophomore Luke Cushing placed seventh overall (16:03), while North Haven senior Nico Boyle was 16th (16:19).

On Oct. 28, Xavier captured the Class L state title, while Guilford placed third in Class MM.
