Leah Philpotts, Hamden, basketball
The 2022-23 SCC Girls Basketball Player of Year, junior Leah Philpotts led Hamden to its first Class LL state title, culminating with a dominating 28-point effort in the Green Dragons’ 63-48 victory over Fairfield Ludlowe on March 18 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Hamden (27-0) became just the second SCC team to finish a season undefeated (Guilford, 2001). In Hamden’s four state tournament games, Philpotts averaged 20.4 points and 14.1 rebounds a game.
James Heber, Fairfield Prep, ice hockey
Senior goaltender James Heber was a standout as Fairfield Prep captured both the SCC and state Division I titles during the month of March. Heber made 32 saves, including four more in a shootout period, as the Jesuits held off Notre Dame-West Haven, in the SCC final on March 3. In Prep’s three state tournament games, he allowed just two goals (making 73 saves), including 42 in the Division I title game on March 21 against SCC-rival Notre Dame-West Haven.
