Congratulations to New Haven Citywide Athletic Director Erik Patchkofsky and his team for the refurbishment of Floyd Little Athletic Center, which was first opened in 2002.
The FLAC reopened Thursday, Dec. 18 with nearly $9 million in renovations funded through a state grant, marking the completion of phase one of a major upgrade to New England’s largest high school athletic facility.
The renovated center hosted its first basketball games between Wilbur Cross and Hillhouse high schools on a brand-new hardwood floor. The improvements include a replaced rubberized running track, new digital scoreboard over the court and two additional scoreboards above the bleachers.
The SCC will host its entire indoor track season at the FLAC in 2026.
In addition, former City athletic director Bob Laemel was recognized with the naming of the basketball court at the FLAC. Laemel was one of the founders of the Southern Connecticut Conference in the early 1990s. Laemel, along with former Wilbur Cross basketball coach Red Verderame, were feted at a press conference and ribbon cutting with City and State Officials on Dec. 18.
