SCC’s May 2025 Athletes of Month, presented by j.roo’s of North Haven

The Southern Connecticut Conference, with the support of presenting sponsor j.roo’s of North Haven, is naming a female and male athlete of the month during the academic year.  It is the third year that j.roo’s has sponsored the Athlete of Month award. Each recipient receives a certificate and $25 gift card to j.roo’s.   j.roo’s is located at 243 State Street in North Haven.

SCC Athletes of the Month for May 2025

Sarah Roberts, Mercy, outdoor track & field

A junior, Sarah won three events at the SCC Championship Meet to lead Mercy to its first league title since 2016.  She captured first place in the 800 (2:20), 1600 (5:10) and 3200 (11:29) meters on May 27.   A week earlier, she also won three races at the SCC East Sectional meet.     On May 13, she recorded a personal best with a 10:47 in the 3200 meters in a tri-meet against Lauralton Hall and Guilford.

Scott Wentzell, Lyman Hall, baseball

A senior left hander who earned First Team All-SCC honors, Scott pitched 24.1 innings in the month of May, recording a 2.32 ERA, while striking out 27 batters.  On May 29, he pitched six innings in relief to earn the win and lift Lyman Hall to its first-ever SCC title.  In the win against top-ranked Amity Regional, he struck out 10, allowed zero runs and just one hit. He was named the SCC’s Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
