Southern Connecticut Conference 2020 Girls Soccer Preview
2020: The 2020 season begins Thursday, October 1. Due to the late start, all SCC teams will play 11 regular-season games. The goal is to have each of the three divisions have playoffs where all teams qualify.
Division Alignment: There are 21 schools, divided into three divisions, that compete in SCC girls soccer in 2020. These divisions will be in effect for the 2020 season only. With CIAC mandating regional play due to Covid-19, we have had to shuffle the deck this year and welcome Platt Tech to the fold.
Division A: Mercy, Cheshire, Sheehan, Lyman Hall, Sacred Heart Academy, Hamden, North Haven
Division B: Daniel Hand, Guilford, Branford, East Haven, Wilbur Cross, Career/HH
Division C: Shelton, Amity Regional, Foran, Jonathan Law, Platt Tech, Lauralton Hall, West Haven
Defending Champs: Guilford is the defending SCC champion. Guilford defeated Shelton, 2-1, in last year’s final. Following its SCC title, Guilford went on to defeat East Lyme by the same score in the Class L state championship game to cap off an 18-2-3 season. They also were named the Town Fair Tire “Best of 2019-2020” award winner in a vote this past summer. Ironically, Guilford was not a division champion last year as Amity, Cheshire, Mercy, and Shelton claimed that honor.
SCC GIRLS SOCCER SEMIFINAL NOTEBOOK (Nov. 4)
Semifinal Schedule: #4 Shelton at #1 Cheshire - 6 p.m.; #3 Guilford vs. #2 Mercy - 6:45 @Xavier HS
Championship Game: The semifinal winners will meet in the SCC championship game on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at West Haven’s Ken Strong Stadium.
Cheshire/Shelton:
* Cheshire and Shelton did not play during the 2019 regular-season.
* Since the SCC went to an 8-team playoff format, Cheshire is making its fifth SCC semifinal appearance since 2010. The Rams have reached the SCC championship game eight times, winning or sharing seven titles – most recently 2016.
* Shelton is the defending SCC champion. The Gaelettes are making their third straight and eighth SCC semifinal appearance. Shelton has made five trips to the SCC championship game, winning three times (2018, 2015 and 2010).
Guilford/Mercy:
* Guilford and Mercy will meet for the third time in 2019. Mercy won the first meeting, 1-0, on Oct. 1, and the two teams played to a scoreless tie on Oct. 25.
* Guilford is making its third semifinal appearance, and first since 2014. Guilford has reached the SCC championship game six times, winning five titles (2014, 2013, 2002, 2001 and 2000).
* Mercy is making its second straight and fifth overall SCC semifinal appearance. The Tigers have reached the SCC finals six times, sharing the 2003 title with Cheshire.
