2002 SCC Girls Basketball Championship Notes

It’s a Rematch:   It is the fourth time in the SCC’s 26 years that there is a championship game rematch.  In 2001 and 02, Hillhouse played Guilford.  In 2005 and 2006, Hillhouse met Career in the league final.  And in 2015, 2016 and 2017, the SCC had a Mercy-Daniel Hand final.

Hamden is the defending SCC champion.  The Green Dragons, behind a game-high 31 points from Tournament Most Outstanding Player Taniyah Thompson (now playing at East Carolina University), defeated East Haven, 65-49.  It was Hamden’s first-ever league title.   MaKenzie Helms (now played at University of Nebraska) led East Haven with 18 points.

Third straight SCC finals appearance for East Haven.   Mercy has the league record, appearing in six straight finals from 2013-2018.  Guilford appeared in five straight championship games from 1999-2003.

East Haven won both regular-season meetings in 2019-20:   61-39 on Dec. 30 in Hamden;  49-42 on Jan. 17 in East Haven.

Branford HS:   Branford High School is hosting the SCC girls basketball championship game for the fifth time.  Branford host the first-ever SCC title game in 1995 (a 42-36 Shelton win over Sacred Heart Academy) and also championship games in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
