SCC Unified Basketball Tournament is Wednesday, Feb. 24 at Floyd Little Athletic Center

The annual SCC Unified Basketball Tournament will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.  Sixteeen SCC schools are scheduled to participate.

Amity Regional, Branford, Cheshire, Daniel Hand, East Haven, Foran, Guilford, Hamden, Hillhouse, Jonathan Law, Lyman Hall, North Haven, Sheehan, Shelton, West Haven and Wilbur Cross will have teams at the event, which features four 15-minute games with free substitutions.   Special thanks to the IAABO Board 10 for donating its officials for the event.

Basketball is one of three Unified Sports events the SCC hosts.  The league hosted a soccer tournament in the fall, and hosted two bowling events in early February.

Unified Sports is a program that combines approximately equal numbers of individuals with (athletes) and without (partners) intellectual disabilities on the same sports teams for training and competition. All participants are of similar age and ability. Unified Sports is an important program because it expands sports opportunities for athletes and partners seeking new challenges. In addition, Unified Sports dramatically increases inclusion in the community by helping to break down barriers that have historically kept people apart. At the same time, Unified Sports provides a valuable sports opportunity to individuals who are not presently involved with Special Olympics or other sports programs.
