We have a Winner! The Best Moment/Performance in the SCC in 2013-14, presented by Town Fair Tire

WE HAVE A WINNER! Congratulations to the Cheshire girls volleyball team, voted the SCC's "Best Moment/Performance" in 2013-14, presented by Town Fair Tire, the best place to buy tires. The Rams, under the direction of head coach Sue Bavone, finished a perfect 27-0 and won the SCC and Class LL titles.  Cheshire is the third SCC girls volleyball team to finish a season undefeated.

• Xavier tennis freshman Richard Ciamarra wins SCC Division II Player of the Year on his way to capturing the Class LL and State Open singles titles.
• Lauralton Hall of Milford joins the SCC as the league’s 23rd full member.
• West Haven’s Ed McCarthy becomes the state’s all-time winningest football coach with a win over Hamden on October 26.
• On November 16, Guilford defeats league-rival Branford in the Class L girls soccer state championship game just two weeks after winning the SCC title over the Hornets.
• Fairfield Prep senior Christian Alvarado completes the triple crown – he is named Most Outstanding Athlete in the SCC cross country, indoor track and outdoor track & field championship meets.
• Despite starting the season 0-3, Amity Regional wins its second straight Class LL baseball title, defeating Southington, 8-2, on June 15.
• Fairfield Prep boys swimming team captured its 10th straight SCC title with a dominating effort on March 5.
• Fairfield Prep captures its first-ever SCC boys basketball title; the Jesuits defeat Hillhouse, 56-52, in the title game on March 5.
• Led by senior Stefani Taschner, the Daniel Hand gymnastics team captures both the SCC and Class M state titles.
• Week #1 of football season has teams from the SCC and FCIAC compete in 17 games with the FCIAC holding a slim, 9-8 edge.
• Guilford girls ice hockey team blanks Darien, 2-1, in overtime in the state semifinals to reach its first-ever state championship game.
• North Haven’s Rasmey Kong shoots a one-under 70 to earn medalist honors at the SCC Golf Championship on May 27. Kong goes on to capture medalist honors at the Division II state tournament two week later.
• Wilbur Cross sophomore Danae Rivers sets an Indoor Track State Open record in the mile (4:52.29 seconds). She then went on to claim the mile crown at the New England Championships, and finish fourth at the national meet.
• Ben Solin scores three goals, including the game-winner, as Daniel Hand defeated league-rival Amity, 5-4, in the Division II state boys ice hockey title game.
• Notre Dame-Fairfield, Branford and New Fairfield-Immaculate win playoff titles in the first year of the SCC-SWC Boys Ice Hockey League.
• Branford’s Anna Atkinson wins the state heptathlon – becoming the third straight SCC winner.
• Daniel Hand boys and girls tennis team both capture league titles with exciting, hard-fought 4-3 victories over Amity in the SCC championship matches on May 30.
• A league-record three SCC softball teams – Amity Regional (LL), Sacred Heart Academy (L) and East Haven (M) – reach state title games. It is the fourth straight year at least two SCC teams reached the championship game.
• Fairfield Prep avenges two regular-season losses to Darien and defeats the Blue Wave, 2-1, in the Division I state ice hockey championship game.
• On June 13, Shelton’s Peter Cotto completed a sweep of the discus competition, winning the New England title with a throw of 165’7”. Cotto also won the SCC, Class LL and State Open titles.
