01-25-08 - SCC to Host Cheerleading Competition

NEWS FROM THE SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT CONFERENCE
For Immediate Release: January 25, 2008

Southern Connecticut Conference to Host Cheerleading Competition
Will be held Saturday, February 2 at Shelton High School

The Southern Connecticut Conference will host its third Cheerleading Competition on Saturday, February 2, at Shelton High School. Warm-ups start at 9:00 a.m, and the competition will follow at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $5.00 for adults, $3.00 for students. Children under six will be admitted free.

Squads will participate in one of four different categories – non-building (a new category for 2008), 14-under squad size, 15-over squad size, and co-ed.

Schools tentatively scheduled to compete include Branford, Career, Cheshire, Derby, East Haven, Foran, Guilford, Hamden, Hillhouse, Jonathan Law, North Haven, Sacred Heart Academy, Sheehan, Shelton, West Haven and Wilbur Cross.

“The cheerleading competition has become a marquee event for the Southern Connecticut Conference,” explained Commissioner Al Carbone. “More importantly, we have been able to modify and improve the structure of the competition so all of our member schools can participate and be comfortable doing so.”

Shelton is defending 15-over champion, while Foran and Derby were runners-up. Hamden captured the 14-under title with Amity as the runner-up. Branford is the defending co-ed division champion.

For the second straight year, the event sponsor for the SCC cheerleading competition is Bird's Eye Sports (www.birdseyesports.com).

The 2007-08 academic year marks the 14th year for the Southern Connecticut Conference (www.southernconnecticutconference.org). Comprised of 23 high schools with over 23,000 students representing 17 communities, the SCC has a great tradition of athletic success (26 sponsored sports) and also offers first-rate non-athletic programs and events which seek to enrich its students’ overall high school experience.
