Six SCC Football Contests to Be Televised in 2008
WCTX/MyTV9 and MSG Will Showcase the SCC

(August 14, 2008) -- The Southern Connecticut Conference will have six football contests broadcast on television this fall. WCTX/My TV 9 will feature five games involving seven SCC schools in its “High School Game of the Week” package this fall, while MSG TV will feature a SCC contest for the second straight season. Games will be streamed live on WTNH.com, and be replayed the next night on WCTX / MyTV9. The MSG telecasts are shown on following Sunday morning.

“What a great way to kick off the 15th year for arguably the best high school football conference in the state,” said SCC Commissioner Al Carbone.

Daniel Hand, the defending SCC Division I East champion and state Class MM runner-up, will be televised three times this fall starting with its season-opener on Thursday, September 11 against perennial state power New London. Eight days later, head coach Steve Filippone’s Tigers will travel to Hamden to meet the Green Dragons and first-year coach Scott Benoit. Both games will be shown on WCTX/My TV 9.

A week later on September 26, Hand travels down Interstate-95 to Fairfield Prep to meet the Jesuits, who are under the direction of head coach Rich Magner and coming off an impressive 8-2 campaign in 2007. The Hand-Prep game will be televised on the MSG. It is the second straight year the highly-popular regional sports network will televise a SCC contest. Last year, Shelton defeated Fairfield Prep, 26-21, before 6,000 fans at Finn Stadium.

Shelton, the 2007 SCC Division I West champion and state Class LL runner-up, will be televised in week three (September 26) at Cheshire on WCTX/My TV 9. The Rams, who finished 6-4 a year ago, return to the WCTX/My TV 9 airwaves two weeks later at Notre Dame of West Haven. In week nine (November 8), Fairfield Prep will host SCC Division I West rival Xavier on WCTX/My TV 9.

Since the league’s inception in 1994, SCC football teams have won 17 state championships. Hand (1997, 2003, 2004 and 2005) and Cheshire (1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997) each have won a league-best four titles in that span, while Shelton has won three (1995, 2000 and 2003). Six times in those 14 years, a SCC football squad has finished the season as the highest-ranked team in the state, most recently Xavier in 2005.

In addition to the televised contests this fall, numerous SCC football games and other fall sporting events will broadcast by local media outlets - Don Boyle’s www.sportingnewsct.com and by George “Coach” DeMaio on 1300 AM ESPN Radio.

“The SCC has had a great tradition of success in football, and this year looks to be no different,” added Carbone. “High school sports fans will get their full of SCC action through the various media outlets and this is very exciting for everyone involved, especially our student athletes.”

Founded in 1994, the Southern Connecticut Conference enters its 15th season of competition in 2008-09 with 23 member-schools and nearly 23,000 students. Recognized as the premier athletic league in the state of Connecticut, SCC member schools have captured over 260 state championships since the league’s inception. More importantly, the SCC is recognized for its outstanding non-athletic programs and events, which attempt to break down barriers and build bridges of understanding to its students.
