SCC BASEBALL PLAYOFFS RETURN TO YALE FIELD FOR 14th YEAR

New Haven, CT – Historic Yale Field will be the site of the 2008 Southern Connecticut Conference baseball tournament semifinals and championship game.

The six-team tournament – comprised of the four divisional winners and two wild cards - is tentatively scheduled to begin Tuesday, May 20. Two opening round games will be played at Piurek Field at West Haven High School before the tournament moves to Yale Field for the semifinals and championship game.

“We are very pleased to return to Yale Field for the 14th straight year,” said SCC Commissioner Al Carbone. “Athletic Director Tom Beckett and his staff at Yale University were instrumental in keeping this tradition alive and we are very thankful.”

“For the SCC baseball playoffs, there is no better place than Yale Field. It’s a great baseball park in an even better location. I know our players and coaches enjoy playing there,” Carbone added.

Guilford is the defending SCC baseball champion. The Indians, who were also the Class L state champions, defeated three-time defending SCC champion Amity, 7-1, in the 2007 championship game. Amity (2004, 2005 and 2006) and Notre Dame (1995, 1996 and 1997) each have won a league-best three titles.

Opened in 1927, Yale Field is home to Yale’s Division I baseball program. In addition, the field was home of the New Haven Ravens (Double-A franchise, 1994-2003) and the New Haven County Cutters (Can-Am independent league franchise, 2004-2007). The concourse underneath the stands is lined with the names of famous players who played at the stadium. These include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Todd Helton and former U.S. President, George H.W. Bush.

Founded in 1994, the Southern Connecticut Conference is in its 14th season of competition in 2007-08 with 23 member-schools and nearly 23,000 students. Recognized as the premier athletic league in the state of Connecticut, SCC member schools have captured over 250 state championships since the league’s inception. More importantly, the SCC is recognized for its outstanding non-athletic programs and events, which attempt to break down barriers and build bridges of understanding to its students.
