 Football Classes for 2010

Last fall, the CIAC voted to expand the football state playoffs starting in the 2010 season. The new format expands the  number of teams that qualify from 24 to 32, although there will now be four divisions instead of six. Eight teams in each division would qualify for the playoffs. Listed below are the classifications of the 19 football-playing SCC schools.

Class LL (8): Amity, Cheshire, Fairfield Prep, Shelton, West Haven, Wilbur Cross, Xavier

Class L (5): Branford, Daniel Hand, Guilford, North Haven, Notre Dame

Class M (6): East Haven, Foran, Hillhouse, Jonathan Law, Lyman Hall, Sheehan

There are no SCC teams that compete in Class S.

MyTV9 Will Televise Six SCC Football Games

For the third straight year, the SCC will have a prominent role in the MyTV9 High School Football Game of the Week television package. The games will be broadcast on Saturday evenings throughout the fall. A total of 12 SCC teams will be televised, starting with the highly-anticipated season opener between defending SCC Division I East and Class L state champion Notre Dame and 2009 SCC Division I West and Class LL semifinalist Xavier on September 17. The game will be shown the following evening.

Sept. 18 Xavier at Notre Dame – 7 p.m.

Oct. 2 Hamden at West Haven – 7 p.m.

Oct. 16 Cheshire at Wilbur Cross – 7 p.m.

Oct. 30 Amity at Shelton – 7 p.m.

Nov. 6 North Haven at Foran – 7 p.m.

Nov. 13 Hillhouse at Sheehan – 7 p.m.

The New Haven Register (media), Hartford Courant and New London Day (coaches) announced the results of their final high school football polls and Class L champion Notre Dame (11-1) was ranked first, while Class LL champion Cheshire (11-1) was number-two... SCC Football Factoids:

** It is the first time for the SCC to get the top two teams in the final HS football poll... The closest came in 1995 (Cheshire #1, Shelton #3) and 1997 (Hand #1, Cheshire #3).

** The SCC had three teams ranked in top ten... The most SCC teams ranked in the final top ten poll is four in 2003 - Shelton #3, West Haven #4 , Hand #5 and Amity #9.
